The Wedding Present were cult heroes of the ’80s/’90s UK indie-pop scene, retaining their edge even after making the jump to the major-label world. Singer/guitarist David Gedge and bassist Keith Gregory started the band in 1985 in Leeds, England, as a continuation of their previous group, The Lost Pandas. From the start, their sound was based around an amiable-but-insistent, four-on-the-floor feel that seemed equally inspired by post-punk and The Velvet Underground, with Gedge exploring romantic complications like an alt-rock psychologist. With some assistance from admirer and BBC radio tastemaker John Peel, the band’s early singles made a mark, and The Wedding Present’s inclusion on the NME’s epochal C86 indie-pop compilation helped to grow their profile as well. Their second album, 1989’s Bizarro, began a three-record major-label run that saw them work with influential U.S. alternative producers Steve Albini and Steve Fisk. By the 2000s, Gedge was the only original member of the constantly shifting lineup, and the band began widening their palette to include subtler textures and varying moods. But even into the 2020s, The Wedding Present still maintained their core identity.
Members of The Wedding Present include, or have included, David Lewis Gedge, Simon Cleave, Melanie Howard, Shaun Charman, Terry de Castro, Graeme Ramsay, Charles Layton, Samuel Beer-Pearce, Simon Pearson, Pepe le Moko, and The Legendary Len Liggins.
