Artist Biography
b. James Timothy DuBois, 4 May 1948, Grove, Oklahoma, USA. In the 70s DuBois qualified as a Certified Public Accountant, then moved to Texas and worked in commerce and banking. Meantime, he was tinkering with writing country music songs. Moving to Nashville, Tennessee, he taught accountancy in colleges and universities, gradually becoming known as a successful songwriter. Later, he gave up his teaching work to become artist manager for Fitzgerald-Hartley. Among his first clients was Vince Gill, with whom he wrote ‘When I Call Your Name’, which won the 1991 Country Music Association Award as Song Of The Year. Among artists who have recorded his songs are Alabama (‘Love In The First Degree’), Glen Campbell, Jerry Reed (‘She Got The Goldmine (I Got The Shaft)’, which was a number 1 hit), Restless Heart (‘Bluest Eyes In Texas’), Ricky Scaggs, Conway Twitty and Tammy Wynette.
Songs by DuBois that have appeared in films include ‘Something I Gotta Do’ (The Secret Of My Succe$s, 1987), ‘Quittin’ Time’ (The Vanishing, 1993) and ‘Bluest Eyes In Texas’ (Boys Don’t Cry, 1999). He also appeared on screen in The Ballad Of Bering Strait (2003). Concentrating on work in production, DuBois became very successful. In 1989 he formed Arista Nashville, which in 11 years sold some 80 million albums worldwide. In 2002, he became president and senior partner of Universal South Records. He has also been on the boards of the CMA, Academy of Country Music, National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences and is a member of the Nashville Songwriters Association International.
