Artist Biography
b. Kansas City, Missouri, USA. Shapiro studied music at the University of Boston and co-founded a music school. He moved to Los Angeles and played in a jazz trio. His first songs were recorded by George Benson (‘Never Give Up On A Good Thing’) Sister Sledge and Smokey Robinson. Frank Sinatra recorded ‘Nobody Has A Better Dream Than Me’, but the track has not been released. Since concentrating on country music Shapiro has written over 50 Top 10 singles. His country hits include ‘I’m Not Through Loving You Yet’ (Conway Twitty), ‘In A New York Minute’ and ‘Love Talks’ (Ronnie McDowell), ‘Only When I Love’ (Holly Dunn), ‘Touch And Go Crazy’ (Lee Greenwood), ‘Your Heart’s Not In It’ (Janie Fricke), ‘If You Ever Stop Loving Me’ (Montgomery Gentry), and ‘Ain’t Nothing ’Bout You’ (Brooks And Dunn) He has co-written ‘Take That’ (Lisa Brokop), ‘Watch Me’ (Lorrie Morgan) and ‘Wink’ (Neal McCoy). Kathy Mattea’s ‘Walkin’ Away A Winner’ has become a feminist statement, but Shapiro wrote it after seeing the film Rocky : ‘I thought that was real cool - he lost, but he won.’ He also produced Dusty Springfield’s 1995 album, A Very Fine Love. He was titled BMI’s Country Songwriter Of The Year in 1993, 1996, 1997 and 2002.
