Artist Biography
Originally formed in the mid-1940s on a US military base in Puerto Rico, vocal group Trio Vegabajeño became one of the most popular Latin musical trios of the mid-to-late 20th century.
∙ In 1943, they released the first recorded version of “En Mi Viejo San Juan,” a world-renowned Puerto Rican folk anthem that has been covered more than 1,000 times.
∙ They reunited in 1986 to record the song “Medley: Trio Vegabajeño” that appeared on Latin pop singer Danny Rivera’s album Ofrenda.
∙ Honored in 1996 with the unveiling of a memorial statue (“Monumento al Trío Vegabajeño”) in the city of Vega Baja, they were named “The National Trio of Puerto Rico.”
∙ Trio Vegabajeño was inducted into the International Latin Music Hall of Fame in 2002.
∙ Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny closed his chart-topping 2020 LP, El Último Tour Del Mundo, with a recording of their 1950s hit “Cantares de Navidad.”
