In the artist’s words:
Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. One of my earliest musical memories was learning the Kora in The Gambia from the Master of the Kora, Amadu Bansang Jobarteh when I was 8 years old. He was from one of five ‘griot’ families and this experience has shaped my vision of music ever since.
What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Bob Marley & The Wailers, Exodus (2013 Remaster) Miles Davis, Kind of Blue Oumou Sangaré, Ko Sira I grew up as a child listening to Exodus and it was very formative in my understanding of music and it’s inherent potent power. The ability for words, sounds and sonics to change the world. ‘Kind of Blue’ and ‘Ko Sira’ are two other albums I love.
Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “Lamentation” Lamentation was the title track from my debut album which carried a lot of my world and experiences from that time. It also gave me the opportunity to work with players from the London Sinfonietta for the first time.
What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? One of the most memorable moments in my career was composing and performing a piece for some of my favourite artists including; Kasse Mady Diabate, Oumou Sangare, Toumani Dibate, African Classical Music Ensemble and Brodsky Quartet at the Basilique.
Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? Yes, I would like to do a collaboration with the singer, Nneka whose work I admire. She has a very distinct voice and sound and is a unique artist.
