Resurrecting the dark beauty of late-'90s/early-2000s alternative rock, Paris-based outfit Venice May blends melody with atmosphere on a heavy yet ethereal sound similar to A Perfect Circle, the Smashing Pumpkins, and Evanescence. Utilizing traditional guitar effects without the aid of synthesizers, they crafted the expansive atmospherics found on their self-released, official full-length debut, Illusion Is Inevitable, in late 2018.
After moving to France in 2010, Ukraine-born Natalia Samofalova (vocals/guitar/piano) met her French partner Vincent Bedfert (lead guitar). Once their relationship developed, the pair formed Venice May in 2013. In addition to the aforementioned influences, their sonic design was also informed by PJ Harvey, Brand New, Sigur Rós, Portishead, and Radiohead, while Samofalova's vocals soared and swelled with a power similar to Kate Bush, Tori Amos, and Dolores O'Riordan. For their first effort, Samofalova and Bedfert handled all writing and production duties, with assistance from Alexey Stetsyuk, who mixed and mastered their debut in Belarus, as well as bassist Sly and drummer Jeremie. Including the single "Hiding Place," Illusion Is Inevitable arrived in September 2018. ~ Neil Z. Yeung
