About Victor
Artist Biography
Taken from W.H. Auden’s poem of the same name, Victor is the enigmatic title given to Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson’s first solo project. In 1994, for the first time in their career, the trio agreed to take a break from their established work regime and Lifeson took the opportunity to put together his first solo album. Recorded over 10 months at his home studio, just north of Toronto, the result was a very dark, diverse and aggressive album. Much of the recording was completed by himself, with an impressive list of guest musicians including guitarist Bill Bell, bass player Pete Cardinali, drummer Blake Manning and Primus bass player Les Claypool. Most of the vocals were handled by Lifeson, with contributions from Edwin of I Mother Earth and acclaimed Canadian vocalist/songwriter Dalbello. By Lifeson’s own admission, the lyrical fare is based on relationships and love, subjects already covered a million times over, but the altogether heavier and fiercer intent and execution made Victor sound harder than the smooth art-rock so many fans associated with modern Rush. If anything, the prominence of some of the guitar work recalled Rush’s rockier period of the 70s and early 80s; the inclusion of Dalbello’s powerful vocals, sounding spookily like Rush bass player/vocalist Geddy Lee, on ‘Start Today’ completed the illusion. As a diversion from the usual output from Rush, Victor provided a fascinating glimpse into their guitarist’s inventive solo abilities.
