Tyshawn Sorey is a drummer, pianist, composer, and educator. A MacArthur Fellow and faculty member at Wesleyan, his work embodies everything from modernist jazz to vanguard classical. Sorey's 2017 landmark Verisimilitude erased genre divisions between contemporary classical composition and jazz improvisation. 2018's Pillars was an extended work for sextet. The Adornment of Time, with Marilyn Crispell, followed in 2019. In 2021, he released For George Lewis with Alarm Will Sound. He returned to post-bop with July 2022's Mesmerism, a piano trio standards program. In October he followed with The Off Off Broadway Guide to Synergism, a live, triple-disc set with his trio and saxophonist Greg Osby. June 2023 saw the release of Continuing with his trio. In 2024, Sorey, bassist Linda May Han Oh, and pianist Vijay Iyer released Compassion. Under his own name, Sorey issued the digital archival quintet offering Unfiltered, and in October, released the trio offering The Susceptible Now on Pi Recordings.
Tyshawn Sorey has also released music as a member of Vijay Iyer Sextet, Sirone Bang Ensemble, Paradoxical Frog Timucin Sahin Quintet.
