About Vivek
Chidambaram-born lyricist Vivek Velmurugan has become one of the most trusted writers in Tamil cinema. A go-to collaborator for composers when a song needs to carry both the weight of a hero’s image and a wider popular appeal, the professionally mononymous Vivek was writing poetry even while studying civil engineering and practising law, drawing inspiration from veteran lyricists including Vairamuthu.
Vivek made his debut after being brought in by composer Santhosh Narayanan for Enakkul Oruvan (2015), and the two went on to collaborate on films including 36 Vayadhinile, Irudhi Suttru, Pariyerum Perumal and Vada Chennai. His range extends from feminist anthems such as “Singappenney” from Bigil (2019)—composed by A.R. Rahman and sung by Shashaa Tirupati—to folk-inflected, working-class poetry.
“Aalaporaan Thamizhan”, composed by A.R. Rahman for Mersal (2017), became a high-energy celebration of Tamil identity that resonated far beyond cinema halls. Vivek’s work for superstar actors such as Rajinikanth and Thalapathy Vijay has become a genre of its own—crowd-sweeping, swagger-driven songs including “Marana Mass” (Petta), “Simtaangaran” (Sarkar) and the Madras-slang-laced “Jimikki Ponnu” (Varisu, 2023, composed by Thaman S). Working with composers ranging from Rahman, Anirudh Ravichander and Yuvan Shankar Raja to Thaman S, Vivek pens lyrics that span a breadth matched by few of his contemporaries.
