Seamlessly integrating elements of jazz and classical with breezy indie pop, Wasia Project's music boasts a casual charm that contradicts its melodic sophistication and artistic ambition. The fact that the British brother and sister first began releasing songs while they were still in their mid-teens makes their achievement even more remarkable. Raised in the London borough of Croydon, William Gao and his sister, Olivia Hardy, studied classical piano and violin respectively before forming Wasia Project in 2019. Interest in the duo’s songs grew thanks in part to Gao's rising profile as an actor, with Wasia Project's debut EP, how can i pretend?, arriving shortly after his debut as a cast member on the teen romantic drama Heartstopper in 2022. A winsome highlight of the EP, "ur so pretty" later appeared on the soundtrack for the show's second season. With the dramatic use of strings and Hardy's gorgeously emotive voice, the 2023 single "Remember When" and 2024's "Is This What Love Is?" show just how rich Wasia Project's music can be.
