Formed in Des Moines, Iowa, USA, in 1998 by songwriters and seasoned musicians Dan Hutchison (vocals, guitar) and Brian Wiksell (keyboards, accordion, guitar), Why Make Clocks attracted praise for their artful, melodic blend of chamber pop and folk rock. The duo made their recording debut in the late 90s with the EP, The Transient Swivel, before expanding the line-up to include Karl Siemers (guitar), Boonie Boone (bass), and Pat Curtis (drums). The quintet signed a recording contract with the New York-based independent label Rubric and began work on their debut album at Presto Studios in Lincoln, Nebraska. Fifteen Feet And Twenty Degrees was released in October 2002. Although Hutchinson’s vocals at times strayed too close to Michael Stipe of R.E.M. for comfort, his songwriting collaboration with Wiksell earned Why Make Clocks promising notices from the mainstream music press.
