On Tales of Mozambique, the man who brought visceral, trance-like Rasta drumming to reggae smacks you with the unadulterated thing, pounding out dense, fluid rhythms that move from Olatunji's tribalism to Sun Ra's avant jazz. "Let Freedom Reign" is poignant and raw, adding bass loops and a weeping trumpet so foreboding you half expect Gil Scott-Heron to appear. "Salem Nna Wadada (Peace & Love)" is lighter, but Count Ossie's crew of percussionists and harmonizers mix it up with righteous, bittersweet harmonies that could almost pass for doo-wop.
