On his self-titled debut, Sub Focus brackets his drum ’n’ bass rhythms with song structure. There are plenty of bangers here, but they’re often pocked with gauzy vocals from singers like Tom Casswell (“Follow the Light”) and Takura Tendayi (“World of Hurt”). Atmospheric synth washes, as well as a wobbly house beat on the hit “Could This Be Real,” make this album vital for clubs and warehouses alike. Meanwhile, on the ‘90s throwback “Last Jungle,” Sub Focus harks back to the sound’s early years as he revitalizes it for the future.
