Always upbeat, never bitter. Paul McCartney’s 14th solo album is proof that his well of ebullient melody never runs dry, particularly in the hiccupy chorus to “Ever Present Past” and the plangent chord twists of “Feet In the Clouds”. He’s in a reflective mood, too, with the pastoral whimsy of “Mr. Bellamy”, and the skippy, rocking “That Was Me” looking backward with a fond and imaginative eye. “Dance Tonight” channels his very first musical impulse—to create songs for parties.
