On Wangikhulisa uMama, the veteran maskandi duo Shwi no Mtekhala remain repositories of everyday stories. Before waxing poetic about love and materialism (“Alukho”), moaning about heartbreak (“Ex Yami”), and reminiscing on friendship and social festivities (“Sdakwa Sonke”), they reflect on COVID-19, how the virus changed life as we knew it and is now engraved in the history of mankind. On the album’s title track, the duo pay homage to mothers’ love and nurturing in a moving second-person narrative.
