Since releasing his debut album in 2001, Eric Roberson has tended to keep things comfortingly simple, gathering acclaim and devotion by writing about his emotions transparently and presenting them through unambiguously classic R&B. The New Jersey native continues to share what feel like intimate, openhearted conversations on Lessons, a collection of wide-eyed love songs, wounded confessionals, and a couple of things in between. On the introductory "Start All over Again," Roberson dives into a funky blend of electric strings and emphatic horns for a romantic confection that sounds like new romance: "You and I have an opportunity to make every single day feel just like a holiday,” he sings. For the characteristically earnest title track, he cruises over bluesy guitar and subdued percussion as he makes a cathartic personal revelation: "All those sleepless nights, all the heartbreak I had, led me to you,” he testifies, echoing the unashamed sincerity he’s embraced from the start.
