Djanaba’s debut album may be perfectly engineered for the dance floor, but that doesn’t mean the Bundjalung singer and producer minces words with her bubbly electronic pop. Opener “Times Like SIS” sees her turn the rude awakening of adulthood into a sugary chorus that nonetheless packs some heavy themes: “When did this shit change?/When do we learn?/When do we end up here in an urn?” More openly confident is “Stutter,” an anthem about owning one’s body image and demanding equal attention. Sydney’s Somber Hills contributes guest rapping and singing on that track, grounding the bratty energy of Djanaba’s “I’m bored” refrain. And if “Broke Back Bitch” sounds like a particularly pointed diss track, it’s actually a vivid representation of her cruel internal monologue, prompting her to finally ask, “What more could you take from me?” Djanaba excels at crafting clubby earworms with a real depth of feeling behind them. Those include moments of romantic triumph and personal empowerment—see “I’m Ready” and “Big Titties,” respectively—as well as plenty of house-driven catnip that locates escapism in bright melodies and rubbery rhythms.
