Rio Da Yung Og emerged from federal prison in late 2024 after more than three and a half years away. During that time, Michigan rap continued its tremendous growth as spitters and producers from Detroit and Flint proliferated and profited. Representing the latter with no small amount of pride, his full-length return here goes beyond the first-day-out stopgap RIO FREE EP from earlier in 2025 to properly reacclimatize him to the city’s sound and culture. Long a staple of his lyrical repertoire, the punchlines start flying almost immediately on “Different Music” and “Great Day” via quippy one-liners and stinging couplets. As profane and narcotized as he wants to be, Rio sounds reinvigorated on the raunchy “Ghetto Love Story” while hustler cuts like “Big Ben” and “Thug Talk” showcase his scheming side. Local familiars RMC Mike and YN Jay keep the homecoming vibe going on “Dumb N Dumber Flo” and “Rich Regardless,” respectively, though guests from far beyond the region like FBLMANNY and Zillionaire Doe come through to show love, too.
