Electricity In Our Homes
Dear Shareholder
Album - Rock, Music
Championed by pop luminaries like Wire’s Colin Newman and The Charlatans' Tim Burgess (who released some of the trio’s singles on his O Genesis label), Electricity in Our Homes’ debut long-player was one of the most anticipated albums of 2012—especially fans who'd followed the London band since its 2007 inception. Dear Shareholder walks the listener through the group's collective record collection while retaining an uncanny chemistry. “Drumming Around the Room (Part 1)” starts with a nod to Syd Barrett–era Pink Floyd before “Oranges” recalls a time in the realm of indie rock when people believed that the '60s were just the '90s turned upside down. Bonnie Carr’s endearingly twee vocals here add a vintage C86 feel. Further nods to the holy grail of magazine-released cassette compilations surface throughout. The Carr-sung “Appletree” is sure to satiate the appetites of those who crave recordings by The Pastels and The Vaselines; the latter band is recalled by Charles Boyer’s Eugene Kelly–inspired voice and guitar in “South of France.”
