This English band hails from a small seaside town (Margate, anyone?), and its members likely grew up listening to Chris Isaak and The Ventures as well as very English bands like Oasis. The group mixes decades tidily: “To Be Young” blends a modern, ‘80s-rooted britpop sensibility (à la The Horrors) with ‘60s California fun in the sun, but it turns up the contemporary pop dramatics (like crescendos of razor-edged guitar) on tracks like “It’s Not Up to You” while aiming for pure, vintage surf rock on tunes like the instrumental “The Last Supper.” The frothy “Together Forever” is a well-blended Ramones/Beach Boys concoction, and the ‘50s crooner–inspired “I’m No Saviour” stings with a modern edge when Danger swoons “She don’t know/how low I can go/with no remorse.” It’s a sentiment we never heard from Dion or Orbison. “If Only We Remain” is a strong single; the reverb-coated guitar launches into a perfectly pop-pitched bit of jangly melancholy, with Danger’s voice as tender as a schoolboy’s first crush. It yearns to be a summer radio staple.
