Nearly two decades into his career, Tyga has invented a whole new persona, intended to stand entirely apart from the rapper behind hits like “Taste” and “Rack City.” On $TARFACE, we move through the world of the titular alter ego, an early-’80s landscape loosely inspired by the enduring myth of Scarface.
Here our antihero can usually be found morosely counting hundreds, or driving like a maniac on the Miami interstate with his rims chrome and his nerves jangling, baggies of an illicit substance hiding in the dash. It’s a vibe the rapper pulls off with a good deal of panache, trading bouncy West Coast rap beats for ’80s synths and moody melodies (plus the occasional vocoder).
He’s serving on “La Isla Bonita” on “TIME IS CURRENCY,” while “POWDERED DREAMS” channels Bananarama’s “Cruel Summer.” But it’s lonely for $TARFACE despite all that luxury: “FREEZING” finds our star shivering in the middle of July, iced out by a cold-shouldered lover.
