Violinist Esther Abrami is the embodiment of the 21st-century classical musician: Entrepreneurial and digitally savvy, she is a social media sensation who makes TikTok and YouTube part of her artistic persona. Abrami was born in 1996 and raised in the Aix-en-Provence countryside, where she started playing as a three-year-old on a fractional-size violin. After studying at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, England, where she now lives, Abrami entered London’s Royal College of Music. Her rise to stardom has been anything but conventional in the buttoned-up world of violin training. As a student, Abrami created a parallel life in social media and in the process introduced classical music to the phenomenon of viral cat content—a video clip of the young artist rehearsing while wearing a fanny pack with a sleepy rescue kitten inside was an internet sensation in 2020. Posting videos of her practice sessions alongside photographs of her jet-setting lifestyle, Abrami has amassed countless followers on various social media platforms. Esther Abrami, her 2022 debut album on Sony Classical, features new arrangements of popular classical themes and music by the once-neglected composers Clara Schumann and Amy Beach. Having achieved technical proficiency and social media renown at a young age, Abrami is the bridge between the trendsetting Instagram generation and the timeless wonders of classical music.
