b. c.1924, Clarence Redd, USA. A trumpet player and vibraphonist, Redd was a member of Cootie Williams’ band in the 40s. In the early 50s, he played trumpet and vibraphone in Earl Bostic’s band, in which he played alongside John Coltrane. Redd also worked with Milt Buckner, playing vibraphone, and was employed as musical director at King Records. It was in 1956 that he first worked with James Brown, and later became a member of the singer’s backing band, appearing on 1963’s Live At The Apollo Vol. 1. Among Redd’s own name recordings, some of which attained a fleeting measure of popularity, are ‘I Want To Take You Higher’, ‘Pneumonia’ and ‘Please Come Home For Christmas’. The latter gained international exposure many years later when it was used in the 1990 movie Home Alone. His children, Sharon Redd and Gene Redd Jnr., recorded in the 70s as members of Kool And The Gang. He can be heard on Buckner’s The New World Of Milt Buckner and tracks on Bostic’s The EP Collection.
