One of the lesser lights of the Japanese hard rock revolution of the early 80s, Heavy Metal Army comprised John Patterson (vocals), Yuki Nakajima (keyboards), Shinki Sugama (guitar), Masahiko Takeuchi (bass) and Eiichi Miyanaga (drums). Featuring several established names in Japanese rock, Heavy Metal Army were initially regarded as a ‘supergroup’. Patterson formerly sang with Mariner, while Sugama played guitar with Condition Green. Nakajima was ex-Carmen Maki, Takeuchi ex-Creation and Miyanaga ex-Murasaki. Their 1981 debut album for Nexus Records certainly emphasized their status as rock journeymen, the seasoned performers indulging their individual contributions to the deficit of collaborative songwriting. The group splintered shortly after the record’s release, with each member continuing to work with other bands on the Japanese scene.
