Born and raised in Jamaica, Jimmy James began his career in the late '50s, his debut, "Bewildered and Blue" topping the Jamaican charts and closely followed by the equally successful "Come to Me Softly." In 1960 he accepted the role of lead vocalist with the Vagabonds and relocated to the U.K. After supporting the Who at London's Marquee club, the group was enlisted to perform weekly at the venue. The shows were highly acclaimed and enhanced the band’s reputation. In 1968 the band recorded their most popular hit, Neil Diamond’s "Red Red Wine," which marked their debut on the U.K. pop charts. In 1970 Jimmy James had a solo hit with "A Man Like Me" before his breaking into the pop world with the classic "Help Yourself."
