Manno Charlemagne has suffered greatly since the September 30, 2001, military coup against Haiti's president Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Jailed without charges, he was beaten by soldiers and his wife was forced into hiding. Released on October 18th, he was held in military custody for a week. Taking refuge at Haiti's Argentine embassy, he planed to meet his family in Guadalupe. Charlemagne's outspoken lyrics have gotten him into trouble before. Songs such as the anthem, "Fini Colonies" (The Colonies Are Finished) resulted in death threats. Charlemagne was sentenced to several brief jail sentences in the late '70s and he was forced into exile in 1980. He spent the next six years living in Canada, New York, Africa, and Paris. ~ Craig Harris
