b. 10 October 1923, Lombardy, Mississippi, USA, d. 10 January 2000, St. Louis, Missouri, USA. Walton was best known as a musical barber, entertaining visitors to his shop in Clarksdale, Mississippi, but he started in music in his youth, and toured with minstrel shows in his teens. A strong guitarist and harp player, he formed the Kings Of Rhythm with Clarksdale’s most famous R&B artist, Ike Turner, but preferred to stay with his steady work when Turner moved on to a career as a professional musician. Paul Oliver recorded Walton in his shop, singing and playing or stropping his razor in rhythm, and he made an album for the Bluesville label in 1958. From the mid-60s he made a number of recordings, and appeared in short films, and often acted as unofficial host for blues fans visiting the town. He also performed regularly at the Sunflower River Blues and Gospel Festival.
