William Tyler is a Tennessee-born guitarist, songwriter, and producer whose instrumental, often experimental compositions pull from a variety of styles, from sparse American primitive to pastoral country-driven rock and folk. He began his career in the early 2000s touring and recording with acts as diverse as Lambchop, Wooden Wand, the Silver Jews, Bonnie Prince Billy, and Charlie Louvin. Having established his reputation as a versatile and supremely inventive guitar ace, he then launched a solo career. Tyler's personalized take on instrumental guitar music is psychedelic as often as it is traditionally informed, evolving from the spectral Americana of 2016's Modern Country to the high-energy live playing of the 2023 full-band double album Secret Stratosphere. In 2025, he returned to solo work with the ethereal and deeply textured full-length Time Indefinite. He then collaborated with electronic musician Kieran Hebden (Four Tet) on the full-length 41 Longfield Street Late '80s.
