Tiffany Poon: Introspection
Playlist - 12 Songs
“In between our mundane routines, we crave moments of rest,” Tiffany Poon tells Apple Music Classical, “a temporary escape to look and to feel something different.” For the Hong Kong-born US pianist, nothing is more refreshing than spending time with music that’s far from our daily existence: “We expand our perspectives as we try to find our relations to another person’s music. We listen to someone else’s stories, and we feel understood through their melodies as we float in different soundworlds.” Poon’s playlist includes music she discovered or found a new perspective on during what she describes as “the most introspective period in my early/mid twenties.” As she explains, “I was wondering, ‘Who are we? What do we stand for? What do we want to become?’ I looked for answers in Bach’s loneliest piano solo in his Fifth Concerto, and for peace in Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in the simple key of C Major. I yearned with Brahms’ Intermezzo, reflected with Schumann’s Kinderszenen, dreamt with Ravel’s Piano Concerto. Even years later today, I am grateful that this music continues to help recenter my thoughts and emotions whenever needed—I wish the same relieving and rewarding experience for the listener.”
