Japanese rockers Straightener are men of many talents. Their spirited tunes run the gamut from riotous punk with power pop flair (“Super Magical Illusion”) to driving, dramatic alt-rock (“Play the Star Guitar”), and even into more introspective territory with “Tender.” One major constant, though, is the spirited energy they muster while shredding through a ‘90s college rock-indebted guitar solo, creating some bassline magic, or pounding away on the skins. Just check out the uproarious “Silly Parade,” which hits all the touchstones in just three minutes.
