An experimental spirit drives SUUNS’ genre-blurring records, informing the band’s sonic adventurousness in compositions that explore moody rock, jazz-tinged post-punk, shoegaze, and more. It was that same spirit which tied the band to—and set it apart from—the orchestral indie rock of its local contemporaries. Formed in Montreal in 2007, SUUNS never rests on its laurels. Its 2010 full-length debut, Zeroes QC, is minimalist and hypnotic; 2013’s Images du futur expands that sound into more melodic territory while also embracing lush arrangements. But throughout its offerings, SUUNS maintains a gripping tension, whether explicit (2016’s jagged “UN-NO”) or subtle (the warped outro of 2018’s warm “Make It Real”). As the band pursues new sounds, that sense of immediacy continues to make its work feel vital—especially in the heavy grooves of 2021’s The Witness—and upholds SUUNS’ reputation as one of Canada’s most innovative groups.
