Melbourne’s 1927 closed out the 1980s with a procession of heartfelt soft-rock hits, beginning with the simmering romance of 1988’s “That’s When I Think of You” and “If I Could.” Co-founded by former Moving Pictures guitarist/keyboardist Garry Frost and his bassist brother Bill, the band took home two ARIAs for Breakthrough Artist in 1989—one for that first single and another for their multi-platinum debut album …ish. Reuniting with producer Charles Fisher for their 1990 follow-up The Other Side, 1927 added more power and polish to the songs while singer/guitarist Eric Weideman continued to invest in big, relatable emotions. Though it was released five months into a new decade, lead single “Tell Me a Story” doubled down on cinematic synths, gated drums, florid guitar solos, and other ’80s flourishes. By contrast, 1992’s “Scars” felt raw and stripped-back while still packing a sing-along refrain. The band members parted ways the following year, but reconvened two decades later for 2013’s Generation i, a decidedly modern album that took cues from acts like Coldplay and The Killers while still breaking out the synths on “Believe in Your Own Lies.”
