“You don’t have to understand the mechanics of music for it to transport you,” Warren Ellis told Apple Music in 2024. “It can open your mind without saying a word.” That reads like a guiding principle for Dirty Three, the deeply moving instrumental trio the violinist has shared with guitarist Mick Turner and drummer Jim White since 1992. A wellspring of wordless emotion has been present ever since the band coalesced in Melbourne’s rock underground, with early pieces like 1994’s “Everything’s Fucked” and 1996’s “I Knew It Would Come to This” mining intense beauty—and stirring climaxes—in the interplay between just three instruments. Of course, that’s understating the intuitive bond and reliable dynamism between Ellis’ mood-swinging violin, Turner’s spidery guitar, and White’s behind-the-beat pacing. Despite enlisting punk-minded engineer Steve Albini for 1998’s Ocean Songs, Dirty Three notably softened their sound on meandering entries like “The Restless Waves.” And as the new millennium saw them spend less time together—with Ellis working closely with Nick Cave across multiple projects, Turner pursuing solo work and painting, and White drumming for the likes of Bill Callahan and Cat Power—the three quietly expanded their sonic palette when they did reconvene. Ellis both plucks and bows his instrument’s strings on 2000’s “I Really Should’ve Gone Out Last Night,” while 2024’s suitelike Love Changes Everything adds off-kilter keyboards to the mix. Through it all, the three players allow the compositions to move and breathe in real time, valuing generous open space while leaving an indelible mark upon it.
