Few hip-hop artists working today have immersed themselves in mixtape and mash-up culture quite like Cookin Soul. The DJ/producer hails from Valencia in Spain, but it’s classic American rap that looms large in his influences. His music (whether solo or in earlier collaborative tracks) pays tribute to such 21st-century pioneers as Madlib, J Dilla and MF DOOM, as well as to R&B legends like Teddy Pendergrass. Largely built around soul samples plucked from the crates, cuts like the woozy “Bon Bini” and laid-back “Daisy Vibes” play like lost soundtracks to the classic Spike Lee movies of the ’80s and ’90s.
