Since forming in 1984, Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley have made Yo La Tengo an ever-evolving indie rock force. Taking their name from a legendary sports anecdote involving the husband and wife's beloved New York Mets, they made their debut with 1986's Ride the Tiger. After a succession of bassists, James McNew joined in 1991, finally giving the band a stable lineup. A series of classic albums exploring feedback and drones in an indie rock context led to 1997's I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One, which debuted a gentler vibe they've explored, with variations, ever since.
