Inclusive movement and play is the goal of The Quokkas. The members of the Newcastle band proudly come from diverse cultural backgrounds and levels of physical ability, and their songs are brightly delivered while often being instructive too. “When We Work Together” and “I Like You Just the Way You Are” highlight the respective value of team-building and individualism, while “Don’t Pat Me Please (The Guide Dog Song)” educates children about the role of guide dogs like member Matt McLaren’s trusted companion Indy. Other tunes celebrate the joys of food, with “Pizza!” citing how different people enjoy different toppings (and the sheer fun of stretchy cheese) and “Guacamole” incorporating step-by-step directions for making that healthy snack. “Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes” adapts Mem Fox’s enduring picture book, and “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” includes a verse sung in the Western Torres Strait Islands language Kalaw Kawaw Ya.
