Green Gartside is a curator of musical forms. In their primal post-punk incarnation, Scritti Politti took up the scratchy guitars of Gang of Four and the ferocious honesty of Crass. They then absorbed the hard beats and cold romance of early hip-hop and electro—specifically Run-DMC—to create a sumptuous post-disco pop music, with Green's ghostly high voice modeled on that of Smokey Robinson.
