To hear Ayler play it straight, check out his smooth and steady melodies with guitarist Herbert Katz on “Summertime.” There are hints of his iconic phrasing, but nothing like what Greenwich Village hipsters heard in 1964 on tracks like “Itt” from New York Eye & Ear Control, in which Ayler's work reached new improvisatory heights alongside bassist Gary Peacock and trumpeter Don Cherry.
