Massachusetts-based hardcore band Converge formed in '90 and proceeded to spend the next 20 years leading the march toward metalcore. Their breakthrough came after a decade-plus of prolific recording with their '01 LP Jane Doe which arrested the attention of punk critics, who tripped over themselves to laud the band with well-deserved praise. As they continued to develop their sonics; occasionally, vocalist Jacob Bannon has bristled publicly at critics' attempts to generically categorize their output, correctly insisting that Converge deserve to be celebrated for their total uniqueness.
