Los Angeles' The Gun Club achieved underground immortality in the ‘80s by proving that the primal howl of the blues and the terminal velocity of punk were just two different versions of the same thing. With frontman Jeffrey Lee Pierce at the helm, the band embarked on a musical quest for sin and salvation, searching for Saturday-night kicks with their reckless cowpunk tempos and glam-rockabilly hooks ("Sex Beat," "She's Like Heroin to Me"). Only occasionally would they pause to reflect on their wanton ways with gauzy, swooning dream pop ("The Breaking Hands") and twangy, Johnny Cash-worthy ruminations ("Mother of Earth").
