Peter Allen may have enjoyed his greatest success as a songwriter for others, but his own releases provide rewarding insight into the flamboyant performer who was discovered by Judy Garland and eventually married her daughter, Liza Minnelli. Named after the New South Wales town where he was born, 1972’s “Tenterfield Saddler” is a poignant recounting of his life story thus far. After his 1974 ballad “I Honestly Love You” (a co-write with Jeff Barry) won two Grammys for Olivia Newton-John, he released his own moving version the following year. Allen gained added commercial traction when he got more upbeat, as on 1976’s “The More I See You” and “I Go to Rio”—the latter a frisky No. 1 hit at home. Still, his talent at emotional piano numbers was reinforced with 1976’s “Don’t Cry Out Loud,” a Carole Bayer Sager co-write that became a hit for Melissa Manchester two years later. His 1980 song “I Still Call Australia Home” reflected on his life as an expat, and 1983’s “Not the Boy Next Door” updated his skill set for the synth-pop era. After dying in 1992 from an AIDS-related illness and finding posthumous staying power as a gay icon, Allen inspired the biographical stage musical The Boy from Oz and brought new generations around to his snappy yet self-examining songbook.
