When Hakan Utangaç and Cenk Ünnü formed Pentagram back in 1986, they couldn’t have imagined they’d one day reach the status of heavy metal trailblazers in their native Türkiye. But decades later and that’s exactly the case. Since fleshed out to an eight-piece, the band also known as Mezarkabul (“accept the grave” in Turkish) continue to tour and record a remarkably versatile style of metal. It has room for everything from furious thrash (“Beyond Insanity”) to more reflective, melodic cuts like “For Those Who Died Alone” via the occasional folk inflection (“Apokalips”).
