Johannesburg band Shadowclub burst onto a scene that was more interested in the banjo-wielding folk musings of singer-songwriters than the deliciously fast-paced anthems that the bluesy rock ‘n’ roll trio had to offer. But it mattered not. Fuelled by the fire and energy of frontman and guitarist Jacques Moolman, the steady hand of bassist Louis Roux and the inventiveness of drummer Isaac Klawansky, the trio earned the audience’s acclaim with brash lyrics, onstage intensity and iconic guitar melodies. As the creators of some of SA’s canonical rock anthems, Shadowclub’s name has become synonymous with raw talent and undeniable swagger.
