New Jersey's Monster Magnet are proud exponents of stoner rock, created for and by genuine stoners. Formerly of Ramones-associated punk band Shrapnel, leader Dave Wyndorf began sending out homemade demos in 1989, then got signed to Caroline to release Spine of God in 1991. Flaunting their Black Sabbath and Deep Purple roots, the band fit well into the indie world, even if they were too twisted for grunge. They briefly troubled the charts with 1988's "Space Lord," also the first song ever on MTV's Total Request Live once a nasty word was deleted. Wyndorf remains at the helm.
