In French, they call it pince-sans-rire—deadpan. It’s an art that Québec indie rockers Les Trois Accords have mastered, along with writing ridiculously catchy melodies without ever skimping on sheer personality. Such early songs as 2003’s “Hawaiienne” twisted a bratty pop-punk template with shots of ska, country, and jangle, only for 2009’s “Dans mon corps” to find strange bedfellows in marching-band flair and melancholic rock. And the quartet’s mischievous sense of humor really shines through on 2012’s “J’aime ta grand-mère,” a string-swept serenade about seducing a friend’s grandmother. (Think “Stacy’s Mom” with an extra wink.) Singer/guitarist Simon Proulx comes off more earnest on 2018’s anxious “Corinne”—cue his clipped vocal delivery and that rallying romantic chorus—while 2020’s frisky “La semaine des 4 Julie” channels early Vampire Weekend by way of classic power pop. It’s all as infectious and irreverent as can be, never committing to one mode or vibe for long enough for things to get stale.
