The avant-garde saxophonist's piping tones have inspired legions of alto players, while the off-kilter folk style of his phrasing can be heard in the piano-and-violin duo of Leroy Jenkins and Muhal Richard Abrams (“Blues”). But his skill with melody has also seeped into adventurous pop: Lou Reed's “All Through the Night” blends an insistent theme with joyous reed-instrument textures in a Coleman-like fashion.
