Since forming in Canberra in 2008, Hands Like Houses have evolved from the electro-indebted metalcore of early material, such as 2012’s “Antarctica,” to become a more streamlined and dynamic act putting the hook front and center. The band’s 2016 single “Colourblind” scanned as lush, inviting modern rock, while 2018’s tightly wound rocker “Monster” headed in an even more radio-friendly direction. Yet, there’s always been an adventurous spirit to HLH, with their self-titled 2020 EP exploring generous swathes of open space on tracks like “The Water.” That proved to be a turning point for the band, with founding vocalist/keyboardist Trenton Woodley exiting in mid-2023. New recruit Josh Raven took over in that same role, debuting in 2024 with a series of themed EPs that grew into the ambitious 2025 double album, ATMOSPHERICS. On that album’s shoegazing standout “The Devil of Decisions,” Raven proves that his delicate vocal delivery can definitely land the kind of big, emotional punches needed to match the band’s signature crescendos.
