Ohio indie rockers Brainiac only managed to release three under-the-radar albums and several EPs before the tragic death of frontman Tim Taylor in 1997. But thanks to a sound that anticipated the 21st-century post-punk and synth-rock revival, the band had a huge impact on indie rock's next generation. Formed in '92, Brainiac stood apart from their grunge-era contemporaries, combining the keyboard-driven new wave of Devo and Gary Numan with the chaotic post-hardcore of The Jesus Lizard and Fugazi. Despite their caustic style, the band developed a mad cult following in their five-year run.
