Hailing from Kochi prefecture, she rose to prominence in the mid-'90s by mixing bouncy string melodies, galloping drumbeats, and her upbeat singing to create uplifting pop songs that surge ahead. Her first huge hit, “Tomorrow,” accented by bell notes and electric guitar solos, captures this bright sound wonderfully. Although this sun-dappled style has been her primary mode, she's also capable of swinging into songs like “Alone,” a slowly unfolding number featuring just piano, violin, and her somber voice.
