Jon Bellion can write a chart-topping hit when he feels like it. After all, he’s the man behind Rihanna’s arena-scale chorus on Eminem’s “The Monster.” But the New York singer-songwriter grows more adventurous when he goes solo, fusing hip-hop, eclectic pop, and R&B into an intriguingly off-kilter style. On his second album, Bellion gets personal on electro-soul ballads (“Stupid Deep”), plays the sly party-starter on funk jams (“The Internet”), and even flexes a rapid-fire flow over dizzying beats (“Adult Swim”). His love for classic Michael Jackson joints also shines through, especially when Jackson’s longtime producer Quincy Jones lends his sweeping touch to the album’s gospel-tinged finale.
